The College of Home Science Bikaner is an important constituent unit of Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner. It is progressing leaps and bounds since its establishment in 1988. This college is providing the degree in Community Science which means achievement of family happiness, raising of its moral standards, and improving its economic conditions. This college is imparting institutional training in Community Science especially in north-West zone of Rajasthan. The Community Science education in SAU’s prepare students to meet the need of rural and urban families especially the effective role of both men & women as contributor to food production, environmental conservation and enhancement of human resources. The graduates of Community Science play pivotal role in scientific community management on one hand and participate in social development programme on other hand. The Community Science education also prepares students for professional life through entrepreneurship development. Therefore, three year UG programme with additional one year has been reorganized to provide professional degree skill oriented trainings, inplant training and student ready programme for the under graduate students. The college is also offering M.Sc & Ph.D degree since 1996 to impart professional competence to its graduating students. PG Diploma in Nutrition & Dietetics (self financing) is being started from the session 2013-2014. Various co-curricular activities are the integral parts of the Community Science education for the overall development and grooming of the students.

Mission

knowledge and entrepreneurial skills. Empower them for effective role performance for better
community development by inculcating social values. Equip with managerial skills for
management of resources at micro and macro levels during emergencies and normal life to meet
the challenges of technological advancement.”

  4. New Courses in Home Science i.e, Computer Applications, Journalism, Food Quality Control and Management, Library Science.
  5. Certificate Short courses in Empowerment of rural adolescent girls, Basic livelihood skills for graduates, Nursery school teacher’s training, Interior designing for graduates, videography,Food processing and Marketing.
  6. Construction, upgradation and modernization of labs and class rooms in all areas of degree programme.
  7. Intensive plantation in and around college campus and develop nutrition garden.
  8. Establishment of guidance and counselling center for parents and children
  9. Establishment of training center and sale counter for processed products.
  10. Establishment of center of excellence for value addition of arid food products.

Degree Programmes Offered:

The College of Home Science has an extensive course structure which emulates the most modern and daily practices in use.The foremost degree offered by the college are the under graduate degree (B.Sc in Community Science), post graduate degree and Ph.D. Students in the college are also facilitated by the vocational courses. College also provide facilities to the students for their comfort to carry out higher education in their own college campus. These courses can be joined by the students after accomplishing B.Sc (Hons) degree, thus, providing a stepping stone for the student’s self employment.

Admission Procedure

A candidate must have bonafide domicile certificate prior to admission.

B.Sc (Hons.) Community Science + vocational courses ( 3+1 Semester System),

Admission on merit basis of marks obtained in 10+2 and Intake capacity of 40 students.

Eligibility : 10+2 passed students (Science/Home Science/Agriculture / Home science academic / Arts / Commerce / Maths stream) with minimum passing marks 50%.

ICAR Nomination – The candidate must have passed entrance exam conducted by ICAR (9 % of total
seats).

M.Sc Home Science Semester System –Two year programme for students of State Agricultural Universities / two and half years for students coming from Non-State Agricultural Universities to complete deficiency courses. Pre- PG Conducted by State Agrilcultural University, Rajasthan at the designated time and place. Eligibility –  B.Sc Community science with prescribed standards and clearance of Pre-PG test. M.Sc available in Food & Nutrition, Extension Education and Communication Management, Human development & Family studies and Resource Management & Consumer Science.

Ph.D in Extension Education & Communication Management- Three year degree programme with an intake capacity of 2 seats. Eligibility – candidate must possess a Master’s degree in the concerned subject from SKRAU, Bikaner or a degree equivalent from a recognized university.

Ph.D in Food and Nutritions – Three year degree programme with an intake capacity of 2 seats. Eligibility – candidate must possess a Master’s degree in the concerned subject from SKRAU, Bikaner or a degree equivalent from a recognized university.

PG Diploma in –Entrepreneurship in ECCE& in the Department of Human Development & Family studies (after graduation from recognized institution irrespective of discipline other than Home Sc.) Presently not being offered due to shortage of staff. bears approval of Honorable Vice Chancellor.

PG Diploma – Nutrition and Dietetics – 20 seats – 1 year including 3 months internship Eligibility – On the basis of merit at graduate level (HSc/Sc/BHMS/Ayurveds/Life Sciences) with minimum passing marks 55%.

Research Activities

Department of Food & Nutrition– Assessment of nutritional status, value addition and nutrient composition of local foods, bacteriological examination of water, milk and other foods, clinical studies on non contagious disease.

Department of Human Development & Family Studies– Assessment of knowledge and development of educational programmes on mother-craft, early childhood care and education studies related to the aspects of marriage and family relations, parent education, related to different stages of life span of human development, gender discrimination studies, impact studies etc.

Department of Extension Education & Communication Management – Development and field testing of different visual and audio visual aids, development of training packages in thrust areas for vulnerable groups, impact studies for different development programmes.

Extension Activities

Extension activities are being conducted by both college faculty and students in community. Preparation of audio visual aids for imparting knowledge and information regarding scientific methods for upliftment of community people. Organization of training programmes for community people to improve their quality of life. Empowerment by various income generating activities. Rural area work experience (RAWE) and field trips by the students also conducted.
