Academic programmes (UG and PG)

The university processes two colleges of agriculture, one college each of Home Science and Veterinary and Animal Sciences and an institute of Agri-Business Management. The academic programmes are offered at two places i.e., Jobner (45 kms. Away from the capital, Jaipur) and Bikaner campuses.

 Jobner campus, the oldest institution of Agriculture, in the state of Rajasthan offers B.Sc, M.Sc and PhD degree programmes in the faculty of agriculture only, and the Bikaner campus with 3 colleges and one institute of Agri-business management offers degree programmes in four faculties, i.e., agriculture, veterinary and animal sciences, home science and Agri-business management.

Institute of Agri business management offers only master’s degree programme (MBA) and college of home science offers under graduate and masters degree programmes

Under graduate programmes

 The university offers 3 under undergraduate programmes, one each in the faculties of agriculture, veterinary and animal sciences and home science. The B.Sc (AG) and B.Sc (home science) programmes are of four years (eight semesters) duration which include one semester of Rural agricultural work experience (RAWE) programme. The B.V.Sc and A.H programme is of five years (10 semesters) duration which includes one semester of internship. The campus wise programmes offered are shown in table below –

Post graduate programme

The master’s degree programme is being offered in 14 different disciplines in the faculty of veterinary and animal sciences, ten different disciplines in the faculty of agriculture and 3 different disciplines in the faculty of home science. The institute of Agri business management (IABM) offers a master’s degree programme in Agri business management. The doctoral degree programmes are being offered in 9 different disciplines each of the faculty of veterinary and animal sciences and in the faculty of agriculture and in one department of the faculty of home sciences. The residential requirement for masters programme is four semesters, while it is five semesters for a doctoral programme.


Institute of Agri Business Management

The IABM offers a master’s programme in Agri business management with specialization in four different areas viz., input supply industry, food industry, horticulture industry and livestock industry. This programme is being offered from the year 2000 with an intake capacity of 25 students and in addition, five seats are available for industry/NRI-sponsored students.

Eligibility for admission

 The minimum eligibility for admission to B.V.Sc and A.H course is a pass in senior secondary examination (10+2)/equivalent examination with 50 % marks in physics, chemistry, biology (PSB) and English and/or any other elective and physics, chemistry and biology and/or mathematics with English and/or any other elective subject for B.Sc (Ag) and B.Sc (home science) programme. Candidates with agriculture, biology and chemistry in their 10+2 examination are eligible for B.Sc. home science course. Only female candidates are eligible for B.Sc (home science) programme.

 Admission to M.Sc/M.V.Sc is done through pre-pg entrance test. The minimum eligibility for a candidate to appear in this test is that the candidate must have passed B.Sc (AG) Hons B.Sc. (ag)/b.v sc and A.h/b.sc (home science) degree examination of the university as the case may be or an examination declared equivalent to it with prescribed percentage of marks/OGPA specified in the notification. Candidates with B.V.Sc. sc and A.H and B.sc home science are eligible for admission to M.sc (ag) agril. Extension only.

 For admission to M.Sc (home science) programmes, candidates with B.Sc (home science) from universities other than state agricultural universities are also eligible, but they have to take some remedial courses. As in undergraduate programmes, admission to post graduate programmes in the faculty of home science are meant for women candidates only.

 Candidates with bachelors degree in agriculture and its allied disciplines viz., horticulture, agricultural engineering, dairy science, dairy technology, fisheries, food science, etc., with a minimum of 60 % (50 % for SC/ST) marks from any agriculture university/institute are eligible for admission to MBA programme. Eligible candidates have to appear at a national entrance test. Candidates qualifying at the test will be required to appear for the group discussion and interview arranged by the institute.

Admission of industry/NRI sponsored candidate is made on the basis of merit giving weightage to percentage of marks secured at bachelor’s level, industrial experience, any other special qualifications such as computer management, followed by group discussion and interview arranged by the institute. 

 A candidate for the admission to PhD programme should have completed masters degree from a recognized agricultural university/ICAR institute/deemed university in the subject concerned or related subject as the case may be in which the candidate seeks to specialize with a OGPA of 7.00/10.00 or 3.20/4.00 or 65 % marks in aggregate under traditional system at masters degree level of its equivalent. For SC/ST candidates a mere pass is adequate.

Admission procedure in brief

 The admission for the UG and PG degree programmes are notified in important new papers and all colleges of the university. The notification also contains the courses offered at different campuses at UG and PG level and minimum qualifications required for admission, to various programmes.

 Admission to B.V.Sc and A.H is made through a state level entrance test, which is combined with entrance test for medical course, which is known as Rajasthan Pre-medical Test and Rajasthan pre-veterinary test. Candidates must have completed the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission for admission to B.V.Sc and A.H programme.

 Admission to B.Sc (AG) Hons. And B.Sc (home science) is made through a state level joint entrance test (JET) conducted by the university. One seat in B.Sc (AG) Hons. Programme at SKN college of Agriculture, Jobner is reserved for the candidate nominated by the family of founder of the college, Late Shri Karn Narendra Ji. Reservation of seats for SC/ST/OBC/Girls/Physically handicapped etc. is made in accordance with the policies of the state government. Presently 16 % seats are reserved for SC students, 12 % for ST students, 21 % for OBC students. Three percent for physically handicapped students are reserved with in each category and 25 % for girl candidates. Two seats in B.V.Sc and A.H programme are reserved for tribal students of Lakshdweep. There is a provision for a payment seat in B.V.Sc and A.H programme. However, admission to these seats is again made trough the rank obtained in the entrance test conducted by the state.

There is a provision for admitting students from outside the state of Rajasthan, through a competitive examination conducted by ICAR and veterinary council of India (VCI) for B.Sc (AG) and B.Sc (home sc) and B.V.Sc and A.H programmes, respectively. Presently, 15 % of seats are earmarked for students coming through ICAR, VCI in all the three programmes. Foreign nationals/NRI’s are also eligible for admission through ICAR and veterinary council of India for admission to B.Sc (AG) Hons and B.Sc home science (through ICAR) and B.V.Sc and A.H (through veterinary council of India).

 Admission to M.B.A Agri business is made through a national level test (MAT), followed by a group discussion and an interview. Admission to M.Sc (AG)/M.V.Sc and M.Sc home science programme is made through a pre postgraduate (pre-pg) test.

 For admission to PhD programme all the eligible candidates area called and interviewed by a committee consisting of chairman of the faculty, dean, post graduate studies, dean of the colleges, concerned head of the department and a senior faculty member of the discipline. Admission is made as per the merit list prepared on the basis of total points given to the candidate taking following into consideration –

Under graduation examination marks – 30 % weightage

Post graduation examination marks – 60 % weightage

Experience/interview – 10 % weightage.

 The faculty of veterinary and animal sciences offers M.V.Sc programme in 14 disciplines and PhD programme in 9 disciplines. The courses offered with the year of starting and number of seats available are shown in below table.

The faculty of agriculture offers masters programme in nine different disciplines and doctoral degree programme in nine different subjects, at SKN College of agriculture campus. Whereas, college of agriculture, Bikaner presently offers masters degree in eight subjects and PhD degree programme in six discipline, i.e. Soil Science, Horticulture, Plant Biotechnology, Agronomy, Agricultural Economics and Plant Pathology. The subjects offered along with the number of seats available and year of starting M.Sc and PhD in various disciplines at both the campuses separately is given in the table below –

Faculty of home science offers masters degree programme in three subjects I.e., food and nutrition, human development and family studies and home science extension education. Five seats in each of the course are available and Ph.D. Home Science Extension Education. Master of business administration (AB) programme offers specialization in four disciplines namely – input supply industry, food industry, horticulture industry and livestock industry.

For PhD programme, each student is required to take coursed prescribed by his/her advisor/advisory committee stretching over, the first and second semesters in the major and minor/related fields.

 Scholarships and fellowships

 Only the candidates who are bonafide residents of Rajasthan will be eligible for scholarships.

  1. University merit scholarships

The following university merit scholarships are awarded to the students standing first in order of merit at the under graduate and postgraduate examinations of this university.

    1. a)      For M.V.Sc programme there shall be two scholarships in each subject. The award of scholarships will be made on the basis of performance of the student in the first semester of M.V.Sc.
    2. b)      There will be two scholarships for PhD in each subject. Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of performance at the M.V.Sc level. However, this scholarship will be given from the registration date the end of successful completion of first semester of PhD programme. The total period of the scholarship shall be 22 months.

Note – the continuation of M.V.Sc and PhD. Fellowships will be governed by the ICAR fellowships rules (junior research fellow for M.v. sc and senior research fellow for ph.d programme.)

    c)      Some scholarships are available to post graduate students of animal husbandry and fisheries science under institutional research promotion programme (IRPP).

  1. Scholarships offered by the government of India through the director of college education, government of Rajasthan by advertisement in the newspapers.
    1. a) National Scholarship scheme – this government of India merit scholarship is awarded to the post metric students who have passed the last examination from any of the educational institutions situated in Rajasthan and whose parent’s annual income does not exceed Rs. 25,000.
    2. b)National Loan Scholarship scheme – this scheme is also of government of India and is available to needy and meritorious students of Indian nationality, who have passed specified annual examination (with full subjects), conducted by any statutory examination body, with at least 50 % in aggregate in the first attempt and the income of the parents and the student together does not exceed Rs. 25000 per annum. This scholarship is renewable each year.
    3. c)Need cum merit scholarship – all students whose parents guardian have an annual income of Rs. 20000 and below, and secure 60 % marks or above in the last qualifying examination will be eligible to apply for this scholarship.
    4. d)Scholarship to children of political sufferers – all children of political sufferers of Rajasthan having an annual income less than 3600 can avail of this scholarship provided they are studying in colleges situated in Rajasthan.
  1. The following scholarships are awarded by the director, primary and secondary education, government of Rajasthan, Bikaner.
    1. a)Scholarship to the children of a government servant who expired while in service – children of the deceased government servants are entitled to this scholarship with the condition that a) the government servant should have died during service in the government and b) the children should study in a college in Rajasthan. In case a student fails in any class this scholarship will be stopped.
    2. b)National scholarship to the children of teachers – students whose parents are teachers with an annual income not exceeding Rs. 25000 and who secured 60 % marks or more in the last public examination are eligible for the scholarship.
    3. c)Women merit scholarship – female students will be awarded scholarships for pursuing higher education. Students who have secured 60 % or more marks in senior secondary/graduate examination shall be eligible to apply for the scholarship if the income of their parents does not exceed Rs. 60000 P.A.
  1. Post metric scholarships to scheduled caste/scheduled tribes/nomadic tribes – scholarships of Rs. 280/- P.M are awarded to students of scheduled tribes/nomadic tribes provided that the income of the students parent guardian does not exceed Rs, 5001/- P.M (contact district social welfare officer for this)
  2. Scholarship to the children and wives of the personnel of defense services killed during the war against china in 1962 and Pakistan 1965 and 1971. Application forms for the scholarship are obtainable from the office of the district soldier’s board, which should be submitted along with the entitlement card.
  3. Scholarships available through the government of India.

 Merit cum means scholarship for undergraduates – Indian council of agricultural research awards scholarship of value of Rs. 170/- P.M inclusive of all fees and other charges of the college for full duration of the degree programme. The number of scholarships does not exceed 7 % of the actual admission. Students whose parents have an income not exceeding Rs. 750/- p.m. and who have secured not less than 60 % marks in the last qualifying examination and are Indian nationals are eligible for it. In case of students, whose parent’s income exceeds Rs. 750/- p.m., national prize of Rs. 125/- and merit certificate will be awarded in lieu of the scholarship.

  1. Free ship and half free ship

In each class poor and deserving candidates are offered full free ship to the extent of 10 % or half free ship to the extent of 20 % and these are available to M.V. Sc and PhD students as well.

  1. Scholarship from other sources
  1. (a)Mrs. Kusum Rathore Memorial Trust Scholarship for Undergraduate/Postgraduate students.
  1. ICAR Junior Research Fellowship – Senior Research Fellowship for which direct application to ICAR is made when advertised.
  2. For further information and rules and regulations about the various scholarships and fellowships the students should contact the office of the Dean.
  3. A candidate is eligible to get only one scholarship at a time.
  4. Thesis contingency grant – thesis contingency grant is also made available to M.V.Sc students @ Rs. 5001 – PhD (C.W students @ Rs. 800/- with the following eligibility conditions -

    a)A student who has completed course work with the minimum OGPA required for degree and has passed his/her comprehensive or preliminary examination.
    b)He/She should be registered for full time research in the IV th semester to avail of this.
    c)He/She has been a regular student for 4 consecutive semesters without a gap of on any ground whatsoever.
    d)He/She has submitted the thesis not later than 5 semesters after registration for M.V.Sc and not later than 6 semesters after the registration for PhD (C.W) students.
    e)He/She is not awarded a research fellowship with a contingency grant from any other source.
